Case Study - Trinity Primary School
Project Overview
Client: Trinity Church of England Primary School
Setting: School playground within a natural, tree lined environment
Project type: Bespoke play equipment installation
Primary focus: Challenge · Budget control · Durability · Integration with surroundings
The Brief
Trinity Church of England Primary School required a new play feature aimed specifically at Key Stage 2 pupils. The brief was to provide an element of ongoing physical challenge that would remain engaging as children developed, while working within the constraints of a defined school budget.
The school also wanted the new installation to sit comfortably within the existing outdoor environment, which included mature trees and a natural setting.
Key constraints
Equipment needed to be suitable for Key Stage 2 children
Requirement for progressive physical challenge
Fixed budget
School playground setting with daily use
Design needed to blend with natural surroundings
Our approach
We designed a bespoke single deck tower unit that focused on height, access and physical challenge rather than multiple add on features. The platform height was set at 1.8 metres to provide a meaningful level of challenge for older primary age children, encouraging confidence, coordination and strength.
Access to the platform was designed using a firm grip pole rather than traditional steps, increasing physical engagement while remaining appropriate for the age group. Timber construction was selected to complement the school’s tree lined surroundings and help the structure integrate naturally within the playground.
Impact absorbing grass tiles were installed beneath the equipment to provide a safe, durable surfacing solution that maintained a softer, natural appearance.
Throughout the design process, decisions were guided by play value, budget efficiency and long term usability.
The outcome
The completed installation provides a challenging and engaging play feature that is well suited to Key Stage 2 pupils. The increased height and access method offer ongoing interest and progression, helping the structure remain relevant as children grow.
The use of timber and natural surfacing allows the unit to sit comfortably within the school environment, while durable materials and straightforward design, support long term use and ease of maintenance.
Why this approach worked
By focusing on a single, well considered play element rather than multiple features, the project delivered strong play value within budget while providing a robust, age appropriate challenge that will continue to serve the school over time.
