Case Study - Chilworth Parish Council
Project Overview
Client: Chilworth Parish Council
Setting: Public play area within a community space
Project type: Toddler play area renewal
Primary focus: Safety · Durability · Age appropriate play · Ongoing maintenance
The Brief
Chilworth Parish Council required the removal and disposal of ageing timber play structures and perimeter fencing that had reached the end of its service life. The brief was to install a new toddler focused play area that would be safe, durable and suitable for regular public use, while remaining practical to maintain over time.
The council was keen to ensure the new space offered a range of play opportunities for younger children, with improved longevity compared to the existing timber equipment.
Key constraints
Existing timber equipment and fencing required full removal and disposal
Equipment needed to be suitable specifically for toddler aged children
Public setting with regular use
Long term durability and reduced maintenance were a priority
Clear boundaries and safety surfacing required
Our approach
We began by safely removing the existing structures and preparing the site for redevelopment. The new layout was designed to introduce a range of age appropriate play elements that support balance, coordination, movement and confidence, without overcomplicating the space.
Durable galvanised steel equipment was selected to improve longevity and reduce ongoing maintenance requirements compared to the previous timber installation. Impact absorbing surfacing was installed beneath key play areas, and new low level bowtop fencing was added to clearly define the space while maintaining visibility and ease of supervision.
Throughout the project, decisions were guided by safety, practicality and how the space would be used day to day by families within the community.
The outcome
The completed play area provides a safer, more robust environment designed specifically for younger children. The new layout encourages a variety of physical play while remaining easy to supervise and manage.
The use of durable materials and modern surfacing has reduced future maintenance demands, giving the council confidence that the space will remain compliant, functional and welcoming for years to come.
Why this approach worked
By replacing ageing timber structures with durable, low maintenance materials and designing the space around the needs of toddler aged users, the project delivered a practical, long lasting improvement to a valued community facility.
